WHY A HEAT PUMP?
The benefits of switching to an air-to-water heat pump
Air-to-water heat pumps are the most common and cost-effective heat pump type for Irish homes. They extract heat from outside air and use it to warm your home and hot water — even in cold weather.
Lower running costs
Heat pumps deliver 3–4 units of heat for every 1 unit of electricity used — making them cheaper to run than oil or gas boilers at current energy prices.
Dramatically reduced carbon emissions
Replacing a fossil fuel boiler with a heat pump can cut your home's heating-related carbon emissions by 50–70%, helping Ireland meet its climate targets.
Heating and hot water in one system
An air-to-water heat pump handles both space heating via your existing radiators or underfloor heating, and domestic hot water through a cylinder.
Increased comfort and consistency
Heat pumps deliver lower-temperature heat more consistently throughout the day, resulting in a more evenly heated and comfortable home with fewer cold spots.
Improved BER and property value
A heat pump installation, combined with fabric upgrades, can significantly improve your BER rating — boosting your home's energy rating and market value
Future-proofed heating
With the phase-out of new oil and gas boilers on the horizon in Ireland, a heat pump now protects you from future regulatory and cost uncertainty
OUR PROCESS
How we manage your installation from start to finish.
01 - Free initial consultation
We assess your home's suitability
We review your home's current BER, heating system, and fabric to confirm whether a heat pump is the right fit and what — if anything — needs to change first. If your home doesn’t have a BER, we can carry this out for you.
We handle the full process — including any Technical Assessment required by SEAI — so you're not coordinating between multiple parties to get your grant approved and your system installed.
02 - Technical Assessment (If Required)
We carry out the SEAI Technical Assessment
For homes built before 2007, we carry out the independent Technical Assessment required by SEAI as part of your heat pump grant application — no need to find a separate Technical Advisor.
03 - Fabric Upgrade (If Needed)
We advise on any required insulation works
If your home's heat loss needs to be reduced before the heat pump can be installed, we advise on the most practical and grant-eligible upgrade options and help you to plan the works.
04 - Grant Application Assistance
We advise on your grant application
We provide the completed Technical Assessment form which forms part of your grant application. While we cannot submit your application, we are available to advise and assist you with the submission if needed.
05 - Design & Installation
We design, supply and install the system
Our engineers size and design the heat pump system to your home using EN 12831 heat loss calculations. We install the system together with any upgrades required to the existing system.
06 - Commissioning, Demonstration & Handover.
We put the system into operation.
Our engineers commission the system, demonstrate how to use it and change settings etc. We provide detailed handover documents and all required documentation to enable a smooth drawdown of SEAI grant funds.
IS YOUR HOME ELIGIBLE?
What you need to qualify for the SEAI heat pump grant.
Most Irish homes can qualify — but there are a few conditions to be aware of before applying.
Your home must have been built and occupied before 2021
The Better Energy Homes grant is available for existing dwellings only. Newly built homes do not qualify.
It must be your first heat pump system
The grant is only available for first-time heat pump installations. Homes that already have a heat pump installed (whether functional or not) do not qualify.
For pre-2007 homes — your HLI must be ≤ 2.3 W/(K.m²)
If your home was built before 2007, SEAI requires the fabric heat loss to be at or below this level. A Technical Assessment will confirm this — and identify any upgrades needed if not.
Homes built from 2007 onwards — no Technical Assessment required
If your home was built in 2007 or later, you can self-declare in lieu of a Technical Assessment. We can still carry one out if you'd like the additional assurance — and recommend doing so to ensure optimal heat pump performance.
WHY MORNING STAR PROJECTS?
One Team for the full journey.
Registered BER Assessor
If you don’t have a BER for your property, we can carry this out as a first step towards the heat pump grant process. No need to engage anyone else.
Most homeowners have to deal with a BER assessor, a Technical Advisor, and a Heat Pump Installer separately. We cover all three..
SEAI registered Technical Advisor
We carry out the Technical Assessment in-house — no need to find and brief a separate advisor before engaging an installer.
20+ years of mechanical engineering experience
Our heat pump designs are grounded in engineering fundamentals — properly sized, correctly commissioned, and built to perform.
Munster-based, locally focused
Based in Co. Limerick, we serve homes across Munster with fast response times and genuine local knowledge of building types and conditions.
Honest, independent advice
If a heat pump isn't the right fit for your home right now, we'll tell you — and advise on what would make it viable rather than pushing ahead regardless.
Managed documentation process
We handle SEAI documentation, and Declaration of Works sign-off so your grant payment isn't delayed by paperwork.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Frequently Asked Questions
A few things homeowners commonly ask us before getting started.
-
Not necessarily. If your home's Heat Loss Indicator (HLI) already meets SEAI's threshold of ≤ 2.3 W/(K.m²), no fabric upgrades are required. We'll check this as part of the Technical Assessment or initial review.
-
In many cases, yes. Air-to-water heat pumps can work with existing radiators, particularly if the home is well insulated and the radiators are appropriately sized. We assess this as part of the system design.
-
A typical air-to-water heat pump installation takes 3-5 days once the system has been designed and equipment ordered. Additional time may be needed to complete any required changes to the existing system.
-
Your old boiler is decommissioned as part of the installation. If you're switching from oil or gas for the first time, you may also be eligible for the €4,000 renewable heat bonus grant on top of the standard heat pump grant.
-
In most cases, no. Air-source heat pump installations are generally exempt from planning permission in Ireland under current regulations, subject to standard conditions on siting and noise. We can advise on your specific situation.
